Jacob's Ladder Book
Guest instructor - Althea Hall

The Jacob's Ladder folk toy dates back at least to the 18th century and
is even rumored to have been found in King Tut's tomb. It is a kinetic
illusion in which the blocks appear to change position but actually do not.

The Jacob's Ladder book is an adaptation of the toy's structure using book
board, ribbon and decorative paper. The finished structure can serve to hold
small pages of text/pictures or simply to amuse by its movement. The class
includes making a Jacob's Ladder book and a simple box to hold it. Please
bring a $20 material fee with you to class.

Althea Hall has been interested in book arts for many years beginning when she
started her career as a classroom teacher in New York City. She made books and
paper with her students to encourage them to develop literacy skills and share her
love of books. Some years ago she was introduced to artist books in a class taught
by Esther Smith at the Cooper Union. Althea continued her study of bookbinding
with Susan Mills and has been exploring and developing bookbinding and artist
books ever since. She is retired from full-time university teaching and now
resides in Salisbury, Maryland where she continues to pursue her interests in
artist books.
